Designing a new speaker for BOSE
For a week, we were assigned to explore the shape aesthetic of BOSE, the speaker company, by using foam cores. The design brief set the speaker to be used in the kitchen settings, in a family that had 2-3 children aged around 9-10.
On the first idea, I focused on the placement of the speaker on the dinner table. I thought a speaker on the dinner table would take up too much space, so I've thought of using the edges to place the speaker. However, it seemed illogical to design a speaker that needs to be installed in the corner of the dinner table when there were too many different dinner table designs.
On the second idea, I focused on the part of the design brief where it said: "a family that had 2-3 children aged around 9-10." This range of age made me think of those occasions on the dinner table where kids held their smartphones which distracted the family conversations.
So after this week-long assignment was over, I went back to the second idea and reworked how it would be made sense in reality. Since this was a speaker designed to placed on the dinner table, I wanted to help the parents to make their kids stop looking at their cellphones and start a conversation.
